For
a number of years, high school students from the Civitas United Nations
have gone to Chicago for the Model United Nations of the University of
Chicago. For four days in January or February, 2,500 students
gather at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago's Loop and engage in
intense debate over complex and highly-detailed issues. Quite
frankly, we have had a number of students who have taken the "MUNUC
challenge" and done very well. We have also had a number who have
found it tedious and boring. It's intense, and it's a fine
opportunity for some students. Presently, our strategy is to
attend every other year (next in 2005), but that is always subject to
change. The trip includes a morning of
sightseeing in Chicago as well as an event of entertainment at an
establishment such as the "Second City Comedy Club." Travel is by
Amtrak; we want to support historic America.
No matter how anyone feels about the MUNUC experience, it
is a remarkable achievement of work by undergraduate students at the
University of Chicago who work very long hours for no pay or credit.
