Global Gateway Project on HIV/AIDS this Week
In preparation for last week's Global Gateway project on HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, students were asked a set of "pre-questions." One was, "What comes to mind first when you think of the Caribbean?" Most students said, beaches, resorts, frolic, etc. Essentially none know that HIV/AIDS is more prevalent in the Caribbean than any place on Earth other than sub-Saharan Africa. Thanks to remarkable reporting by Antigone Barton of the Palm Beach Post (FL) and a robust web site constructed by the Pulitzer Center (specifically Jon Sawyer, Nathalie Applewhite, Janeen Heath, and other sub-contractors), students have learned over the past several weeks about the widespread presence of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean and stretching even into south Florida. They also learned of the "heroes" who are fighting HIV/AIDS in these regions with remarkably innovative ideas and enormous dedication. Last Thursday morning, the Global Gateway journalists met with students from Parkway West High School; Thursday afternoon with students from Soldan International Studies High School; Friday morning with students from St. Joseph's Academy; and Friday afternoon with students from Collinsville High School. Each groups was enthusiastic and full of outstanding questions. On Saturday morning, Nathalie was joined by Liz Morrison, social studies curriculum coordinator for the Parkway School District, in leading a most informative workshop for teachers involved in or hoping to become involved in the Global Gateway program. Thanks to all. We encourage you to visit the Pulitzer web site on HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. You can access it at http://www.pulitzercenter.org/showproject.cfm?id=51.

Students Prepare for Urban Go-Team

Students met last Saturday in preparation for the Civitas Urban Go-Team which is June 9-13. We will be focusing on active citizenship in our community; registering voters, learning more about our citizens through a variety of polling techniques, learning about the risks and safety features of various forms of voting such as optical scanners, touch-screen, etc. It will also be part of the documentary that filmmaker Frank Popper is making on Civitas as active citizenship. The focus of Go-Team will be The Election Process & Campaign 2008. We will learn about how voting is supposed to work as explained at the St. Louis County Board of Election Commissioners. We will have a speaker from Missourians for Honest Elections talk about voter suppression and other irregularities. We'll do some voter registration and considerable polling, in downtown Clayton, using a phone bank, and even in barber shops, beauty shops, and nail salons. Professor Ken Warren of St. Louis University will explain the subtleties of polling. On the final day of the program we will put together individual and group projects. You can access more information on Urban Go-Team by clicking here.
