Students Prepare for Urban Go-Team

Students met last Saturday in preparation for the Civitas Urban Go-Team which is June 9-13. We will be focusing on active citizenship in our community; registering voters, learning more about our citizens through a variety of polling techniques, learning about the risks and safety features of various forms of voting such as optical scanners, touch-screen, etc. It will also be part of the documentary that filmmaker Frank Popper is making on Civitas as active citizenship. The focus of Go-Team will be The Election Process & Campaign 2008. We will learn about how voting is supposed to work as explained at the St. Louis County Board of Election Commissioners. We will have a speaker from Missourians for Honest Elections talk about voter suppression and other irregularities. We'll do some voter registration and considerable polling, in downtown Clayton, using a phone bank, and even in barber shops, beauty shops, and nail salons. Professor Ken Warren of St. Louis University will explain the subtleties of polling. On the final day of the program we will put together individual and group projects. You can access more information on Urban Go-Team by clicking here.

60 Minutes Story on Dr. Paul Farmer, featured in Global Gateway Project

"T.N.T.C." -- that's the phrase that Dr. Paul Farmer used on last Sunday's "60 Minutes" broadcast on his work to fight HIV/AIDS and other diseases in Haiti, Rwanda, and eleven other developing countries. "T.N.T.C." stands for "Too Numerous To Count," referring to the number of lives that have been saved because of modern medicine and medical training that he and others have brought to developing countries over the past twenty-five years. You can see the "60 Minutes" story on Paul Farmer by clicking here (it may be listed on the banner of videos below the top story on the page). When West Palm Beach Post reporter Antigone Barton met with high school students in Civitas programs two weeks ago, she emphasized the work of Dr. Farmer. The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting has a series of revealing interviews with Dr. Farmer on their web site. You can access them by clicking here. [Click on Haiti when you get to the page.] Antigone Barton as well as Jon Sawyer and Nathalie Applewhite of the Pulitzer Center mentioned a very engaging book on Dr. Farmer's work called Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. You can order it (from Amazon) by clicking here.
