First High School Discussion this Sat.

Okay students, you can't say that the summer left you with nothing to discuss. We finally know who the candidates for president will be and that means there's lot to talk about. What are their real positions on issues; how do they try to present their images; do they pander to the public, particularly students; how accurately or inaccurately does the media portray them? What issues are most important to you and do you have any proposed solutions to problems? Also, if you wish, we'll talk about the word 'nuance,' a word that many of our leaders seem to think we can't understand. Let's see if we can. Our first discussion of the year is always a great time to talk about the diversity of schools in our program; single gender and co-ed; public, parochial, and private, diverse and somewhat homogeneous. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these factors. And of course who has the best school lunches? These topics and more of your choosing are on the table. We'll meet at Crossroads College Preparatory School, 500 DeBaliviere; 63112 (map) from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. We will have our usual tasty snacks with some de riguer healthy food included. We urge you to attend and bring a friend or two!

Thanks to the fourteen teachers from eight high schools who came to last Saturday's meeting. We feel that we were able to pass along comprehensive information about our program for the year and hopefully answer questions that you had. Special thanks to Grace Wilson and the staff at the Stone Spiral Coffee House (map) for hosting the event. Those teachers who attended (along with their schools) were: Collinsville (Mark Schusky), Crossroads College Prep (Rise Gillium), Maplewood-Richmond Heights (Christine Henske and Rachel Kunce), Nerinx Hall (Karen Johnson), S.L.U.H. (Anne-Marie Ludholtz, Paul Michaelson, and Bob O'Connell), Soldan International Studies (Hamid Azimi, Kelly Moore, and Davidson Mullegardt), and St. Joseph's Academy (Jane Garvin). We want to remind teachers that they are welcome to all student events. For those whose schools are participating in the Global Gateway program, we remind you that on two weeks from this Saturday (Sept. 13), Jon Sawyer, director of Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting will be in St. Louis for a meeting at Crossroads to provide important preparatory information to teachers and students on the October project on Water Wars in East Africa. We will send you more information on this later this week.

Photo Exhibit Angelia Moore of Oakville High School has informed us of a exhibit on the effects of genocide and warfare on Bosnia which is showing at Southern Commercial Bank at 5515 So. Grand; 63111 (map). The exhibit is co-sponsored by the St. Louis Holocaust Center and Fontbonne University. It includes photos as well as documents related to prosecuting international war criminals (a very timely topic now). The exhibit will be on display through the end of September.

What's Civitas? See video below:

Civitas at Dem. Convention Civitas's senior reporter (actually she's a junior at Parkway West High School), Michelle Ki, will be reporting her observations at this week's Democratic National Convention. She was selected by the Junior State of America to be a high school student at the convention and is being partially funded by Civitas. We have asked Michelle to report on what she sees in the following areas: 1. Hypocrisy 2. Pandering 3. Excess If she was at the Republican convention, we would ask her to report on the same. We're excited to hear what she writes; it will be available from our web page at www.kidswhothink.org.
