Eric Greitens to Meet with Civ this Sat.
A most remarkable individual will speak with and answer questions from high school students in Civitas programs. His name is Eric Greitens; his experiences range from being a Navy Seal to winning the Fallujah Marathon (Iraq) to humanitarian work in Rwanda, India, Cambodia, and Croatia. The apparent anomalies of his life include being a graduate of Duke University and also an experienced heavyweight boxer. Oh yes, he's also been a White House Fellow. He is an experienced presenter on a number of topics including the ethics of caring and speaking truth to power. The event will be on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM at the Richmond Heights Community Center (map). Special thanks to former Missouri Governor Bob Holden for introducing us to Eric.

Jon Sawyer Prepares Teachers & Students for Pulitzer Global Gateway

The Pulitzer Center has a remarkable new section on its web site. It opens new possibilities for in-depth study by students as well as opportunities for extensive blogging with journalists and students from other schools. This includes students in Kenya, ones who are in the heart of the "Water Wars in East Africa" troubles. Thanks to journalist Ernest Waititu, editor-in-chief of Afrikanews.org, students in two schools in Kenya will be interacting with American students no later than next week. The new web site for the Pulitzer "Water Wars" project is http://waterwars.pulitzergateway.org/. Three journalists who covered the story will be in St. Louis to meet with students and teachers from Wed., Oct. 1 - Sat., Oct. 4. So much happening now. Needless to say, we would like interested students and adults to attend upcoming events. Here they are in summary with links to more details:

Meeting for New Middle School Teachers Next Mon. Middle School Model UN is off to a great start, welcoming back veteran teachers while expanding to new teachers and new schools. Next Monday, September 22, we will hold our first meeting for teachers. While returning teachers are certainly welcome, this meeting will focus on introducing Model UN to those teachers who are new to our program (a MUN-101, if you will). We’ll gather at Richmond-Heights Community Center (map) from 4:00-no later than 5:00. Please make sure to bring your school calendars to the meeting since we’ll begin the process of reserving dates in the spring for our General Assembly sessions. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Lisa Granich-Kovarik (granichkovarik@sbcglobal.net, 314-865-4704). Also, don’t forget to mark your calendars for October 13, the next time all the teachers will convene!

In the International Hard to Believe Category .... The Daily U.N. Wire reported last Tuesday: Thailand's prime minister loses post over cooking show Thailand's Constitutional Court rules that Prime Minster Samak Sundaravej as well as his cabinet must step down. The court decided that Samak violated the constitution by hosting a network television cooking show. The decision pleased but sidestepped the concerns of thousands of protetesters who have barred Samak from reaching his office and called for his resignation. The U.S. may lead the league in campaign distortions and even lies, but give Thailand the weekly award for outstanding absurdity in the pursuit of governance.
