Dear Bobbi,

Students Meet Global Journalists
Journalists at Collinsville High School
Last week, hundreds of St. Louis area high school and middle school students had the pleasure and enriching experience of hearing and seeing the presentation on "Water Wars in East Africa" from journalists Jon Sawyer, Sarah Stuteville, Alex Stonehill, and Jessica Partnow.  An outstanding account of the visit to S.L.U.H. has been written by Joyce LaFontain (Rosati-Kain, 2009) who was in attendance.  It begins below and then jumps to The St. Louis Beacon which has been kind enough to carry Joyce's story.

There's a $5,000 college scholarship for the first one to sit in the front row," Jon Sawyer, director of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, jokingly remarked as students from Rosati-Kain and Maplewood-Richmond Heights high schools filtered into the auditorium on the campus of St. Louis University High School.  Mr. Sawyer seems to know very well where high school students' priorities lie.  This hour with reporters, however gave us American students a unique opportunity of gaining first-hand insight into circumstances that command the attention of citizens of Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.

We want to remind you that the project lives on.  Students can continue to post comments and questions and also share their stories.  Sarah, Alex, and Jessica will continue to respond.
The web site for the project is http://waterwars.pulitzergateway.org/

Photos from last week's visit are available by clicking here.

Finally, we are already getting ready to prepare for the next project on emerging class struggles in India with journalist Jason Motlagh.  In all likelihood the visits will be the week of January 26, 2009.  Shortly the Pulitzer Center will be rolling out information on the issue and Civitas will provide related material from the St. Louis area.

Discussion Group Returns this Saturday

It's your call, what do you want to talk about this Saturday?  We can make suggestions such as:

  • Is the presidential campaign going to get dirtier?  If so, will one side be more responsible than the other?
  • Does it scare you when even "the smartest people" in our society don't have good answers to our national and global financial problems?
  • A Nebraska football player spits on Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel; a little league football coach shoves an opposing player as the teams are shaking hands at the conclusion of a game; when do sports stop being sports?

However, the ultimate call is you; if you wish, come with topics you want to discuss.  If you need help with transportation, let us know by e-mail us at info@civitas-stl.com.   Hope to see you there; oh, we almost forgot, there is Crossroads College Preparatory School (map), the time is 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM this Saturday, October 11.

Washington U. Model U.N. Oct. 17-19

There is still time to register for the Washington University Model U.N. (WUMUNS).  The staff of the MUN is very flexible, so students would not have to miss any school.  WUMUNS and Civitas have combined to ensure that any student desiring to participate and who cannot afford the fees (limited) will be able to attend.

The committee structure is very creative and exciting.  In one group, each student will represent one of President Kennedy's advisors during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.  In another, delegates will represent one of the twenty-five members of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China.  There will also be a World Health Organization and a U.N. Security Council.

You can get more information at www.wumuns.net.  Registration is available at www.wumuns.net/registration.html.  If you want more information, please contact our Civitas-WUMUNS liaison, Ariana Miller at miller.ariana@gmail.com.

Middle School MUN Faculty Meeting Next Monday

October is upon us, and so is our middle school Model UN teachers’ meeting and country draft!  On Monday, October 13, teachers will converge at the Richmond-Heights Community Center (map) to learn more about this year’s program, visit with one another, and even enjoy a few refreshments.  We’ll be choosing the countries that will be represented, finding out the dates for the spring General Assembly sessions, and discussing the upcoming student workshop in November.  We’ll also begin the process of scheduling a day for Civitas staff to come and meet with your students about resolution-writing.  So much to do in only an hour!  The meeting begins at 4:00 and will last until no later than 5:00.  If you have any questions, feel free to email Lisa at granichkovarik@sbcglobal.net or give her a call (314-865-4704).  We look forward to seeing you there!
