High School Model U.N. last Saturday
The 17th annual Civitas model U.N. was held last Saturday, Nov. 22 at Spazio's Banquet Hall in Maryland Heights (map). We divided into two committees; one a combination of Economic & Social with Human Rights; the others combining the Security Council with the Political and Security Committee. We are most appreciative of all the students and faculty advisors who came; you made it most engaging and lively. We wrestled with difficult issues; at times we found consensus, other times we did not. The Security Council / Political & Security group could not reach accord in establishing a permanent U.N. peace-keeping force or a comprehensive approach to addressing terrorism. However, it did pass a resolution combatting the recent spate of terrorism; it is available by clicking here. The Economic & Social / Human Rights Committee passed four resolutions; a comprehensive report on their actions is available by clicking here. Following the MUN, we had a most informative workshop on Iraq facilitated by Eric Greitens (see next story).

New Date for Conference on "Carefully Getting Out of Iraq"
We have changed the date of the conference to Saturday, Jan. 17 at Crossroads (map) from 9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon. In preparation for this conference, Eric Greitens (former Navy Seal with combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as humanitarian experience in Rwanda, Gaza Strip, India, Mexico, Albania, etc.) conducted a wonderful workshop with participating students and adults in the conference following the model U.N. on Sat., Nov. 22. He discussed the logistical issues involved in such a large-scale military enterprise as this; he gave vital background on the local geo-political situation in Iraq and the Middle East. The conversation also moved to Afghanistan and other international issues. Eric suggested that the country that the United States should be most vigilant about is Pakistan. If you are interested in participating in the conference, click here for further description, click here to register. If you have questions, contact at info@civitas-stl.com or call us at (314) 367-6480.

Middle School Workshop last Wednesday
Over 600 middle school students came to the Khorassan Room at the Chase-Park Plaza last Wednesday for a comprehensive workshop on the middle school model U.N. Middle School Coordinator Lisa Granich-Kovarik began with a most enlightening PowerPoint presentation on the United Nations and how the Civitas model U.N. operates. She then had students divide into groups by school to brainstorm issues that they would like to be topics of resolutions in the Spring sessions. Arthur led students through a prioritizing exercise, emphasizing the resources to address global issues are limited and tough decisions must be made. The morning concluded with an energetic performance by Bobby Norfolk and Kenya Ajanaku in a program entitled Drums and Voices of Africa. It involved story-telling to music as well as rap. Six students volunteered to come up on stage to help with the program. And as always, please feel free to email Lisa (granichkovarik@sbcglobal.net) or call her (314-865-4704) if you have any questions about the middle school model U.N. program. More photos of the workshop are available by clicking here.
