SwiftPageEmail Subject: Two Weeks Until Pulitzer Global Gateway and Much More

Dear Bobbi,

A Bridge To Somewhere - Today's Survey
REDMOND, Washington (CNN) -- Should a bridge that would connect two campuses at Microsoft's headquarters be funded with $11 million from the federal stimulus package?  This is our survey for today.  Click here to read more.  Click on photo to see a larger image.  Click here to take the survey.

Final '08-'09 Civitas Discussion this Saturday

Our fourteenth and final Saturday discussion of the 2008-2009 school year will be this Saturday, April 11 at Crossroads College Preparatory School (map).  We are ending informal discussions early this year so that we can move into Urban Go-Team mode (see article below).  Our topics this week will be up to you; anything goes.  We begin at 9:00 AM and run until 11:00 AM.

Civitas Urban "Go-Team" Update
Invitations and forms requiring parental permission have been sent out to the families of students who had previously indicated that they were interested in participating in the program.  If you received the forms and have not yet submitted them, remember that the deadline is April 18.

The theme of the June 8-12 program is the job situation in St. Louis.  We are lining up factory tours, neighborhood walks, discussions with labor and industry leaders, and a number of other field trips.  As activities are confirmed, we will let you know.
We would like to tour the GM plant in Wentzville, MO, but it is still uncertain whether autos will be rolling off the assembly line because of dismal auto sales.  If the factory is open, we will try to tour the plant.

Pulitzer Global Gateway Project on Women & Children in Crisis "is live"
We are two weeks away from the Pulitzer Global Gateway project on "Women and Children in Crisis."  We have considerable preparatory resources available for teachers and students prior to the April 20-22 visits by the three journalists who have reported from Nepal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Iraq.

Below are key resources for the project.  Each is important and can help prepare teachers and students for sessions with Meredith May, Alaa Majeed, and Michael Kavanagh.

  1. New four-minute introductory video.
  2. Web Portal -- Enter "Women & Children in Crisis" web site.
  3. Background packet with "the local connection."
  4. Information on Pulitzer Essay Contest for Spring 2009
  5. Local Agencies addressing issues of abuse towards women and children.
With the web site "live," students can begin blogging with journalists.  Make sure that you scan the website for information before blogging; you may find the answers to many of your questions already posted.  But we look forward to individual questions and comments; this really sets the stage for successful sessions with the journalists.

Participating schools are:

Collinsville
Crossroads
Hixson Middle
John Burroughs
Lift for Life
Lindbergh
Metro
Nerinx Hall

Parkway West
Rosati-Kain
Soldan Internat'l Studies
St. Joseph's Acad.
University City
Webster Groves

Finally, we want to remind everyone that that on Tuesday evening, April 21, all three journalists will have a special session at Nerinx Hall H.S. (map) for students from all schools.  Teachers and parents are also naturally welcome.  We would like to have several hundred present, so please pass the word along to friends.  It is posted on Facebook.

Collinsville Students Successfully Organize
Outdoor Showing of movie "Swing Vote"
Congratulations to Jed Robbins (Collinsville HS, 2008; SIU-E, 2012) [left in photo] and Tyler Doyle (Collinsville, 2009) [right in photo] and others for an outstanding job of promoting the informed democratic process with a special program last Saturday evening.  They combined an information booth about candidates running for political offices in today's elections in Collinsville with an outdoor "on the wall" showing of the movie "Swing Vote," an amusing but poignant depiction of how one vote can make a difference.
As Jed and Tyler have said, "The Collinsville Connection has not - and will not - endorse any candidates for the upcoming elections. So who do we endorse? The educated voter; that's who. ... The Collinsville Connection's job is not - and will never be - to endorse candidates; it's to provide enough information for you to make up your mind on your own."

Civitas has always favored fewer slogans and more introspection and education as a way of improving our political process.  Congratulations to the Collinsville Connection for engaging  in creative and enriching innovation.  They continue their work as  student watchdogs of the Collinsville local city government.

Chris Draft Family Fitness Day on May 9

St. Louis Rams linebacker and Stanford Univesity graduate Chris Draft met with Civitas students on March 28.  It was a most engaging discussion of economics and community development.  Chris is sponsoring the DRAFT FAMILY FITNESS DAY 2009 -- "A Project of the Get Checked and Get FitTM Movement" -- which will take place on Saturday, May 9 at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club (map) from 7:30 AM - 1:00 PM.  Civitas is helping the Draft Foundation promote the program.  We encourage students, teachers, and parents in our program to participate.  To learn more about it, click here or on the image below.
