Dear Bobbi,

Results below from last week's survey on Microsoft bridge.

Pulitzer Global Gateway Project on Women & Children in Crisis "is live;" journalists visit next week
We are two weeks away from the Pulitzer Global Gateway project on "Women and Children in Crisis."  We have considerable preparatory resources available for teachers and students prior to the April 20-22 visits by the three journalists who have reported from Nepal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Iraq.

Below are key resources for the project.  Each is important and can help prepare teachers and students for sessions with Meredith May, Alaa Majeed, and Michael Kavanagh.

  1. New four-minute introductory video.
  2. Web Portal -- Enter "Women & Children in Crisis" web site.
  3. Background packet with "the local connection."
  4. Information on Pulitzer Essay Contest for Spring 2009
  5. Local Agencies addressing issues of abuse towards women and children. *
  6. Flyer / Poster for Tuesday Evening Program at Nerinx
With the web site "live," students can begin blogging with journalists.  Make sure that you scan the website for information before blogging; you may find the answers to many of your questions already posted.  But we look forward to individual questions and comments; this really sets the stage for successful sessions with the journalists.

Participating schools are:

Collinsville
Crossroads
Hixson Middle
John Burroughs
Lift for Life
Lindbergh
Metro
Nerinx Hall

Parkway West
Rosati-Kain
Soldan Internat'l Studies
St. Joseph's Acad.
University City
Webster Groves

Finally, we want to remind everyone that that on Tuesday evening, April 21, all three journalists will have a special session at Nerinx Hall H.S. (map) for students from all schools.  Teachers and parents are also naturally welcome.  We would like to have several hundred present, so please pass the word along to friends.  It is posted on Facebook.  Click here for flyer or poster.

If you have any questions, please e-mail us at
info@civitas-stl.com.

* Special thanks to Carisa Henze, an attorney in Washington, DC and Crossroads graduate (class of 1989), for providing so much of the background information on domestic violence in Missouri and the St. Louis metropolitan area.

A Local Contact

As part of the local contact with the Global Gateway program, Rosati-Kain junior Loren Cahill interviewed Detective Kara Roberts from the St. Louis Police Department and Paula R. from Legal Advocates for Abused Women yesterday about domestic abuse.  A mini-film focusing on the interview is being made by film-maker Frank Popper.  We encourage other students to gather more local information by clicking here.

Urban "Go-Team"  Registration
Deadline next Monday, April 20

The registration deadline for the 2009 Civitas Urban Go-Team is Monday, April 20.  All invitations to participate will be null and void after that date for students who have not submitted their forms (note that they require parental permission).

The theme of the June 8-12 program is the job situation in St. Louis.  We are lining up factory tours, neighborhood walks, discussions with labor and industry leaders, and a number of other field trips.  As activities are confirmed, we will let you know.
Some of us may know Collinsville, IL best for the world's largest catsup bottle.  We'll check that out, but also explore the business district with Downtown Coordinator Melissa Leavy.  Collinsville is surviving the economic downturn much better than most communities (even though there is no longer a catsup manufacturing plant at the base of the bottle).   We'll find out about their success with a largely service economy.  Then we'll head north to Granite City to see the status of steel manufacturing and learn about innovative job-retraining programs.

Each week we will let you know about more activities in the program.

Two Students Rise to Chris Draft Challenge
St. Louis Rams linebacker and Stanford University graduate Chris Draft is sponsoring in conjunction with Civitas the "Chris Draft Challenge."  The concept is for students to write about timely issues in a thoughtful and insightful manner.   This emanates from the session on March 28 when he was part of one of our Saturday discussion groups.

So far, two students have accepted the Challenge.  Their writing is on the Civitas website and we hope soon to be on the Draft Family Foundation web site:
Click here to read what Luke Babich (U. City, 2012) has written about "Is it human nature to de-humanize our opponents."
Click here to read what Loren Cahill (Rosati-Kain, 2010) has written about "What is the 'just war 'theory and how does it relate to American involvement in Afghanistan?"

Also, the DRAFT FAMILY FITNESS DAY 2009 is sponsoring  "A Project of the Get Checked and Get FitTM Movement."    It will take place on Saturday, May 9 at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club (map) from 7:30 AM - 1:00 PM.  Civitas is helping the Draft Foundation promote the program.  We encourage students, teachers, and parents in our program to participate.  To learn more about it, click here or on the image below.

Special Comment from Civitas' Senior Pacific Northwest Correspondent
based in Bellevue, WA (Taunya Hilfrink; Crossroads, 1984):

I of course have a biased opinion about the bridge since I work in Bellevue and it will have an impact on me. ...." (

Successful Final '08-'09 Civitas Discussion
last Saturday

Special thanks to the nearly twenty students who came to last Saturday's fifteenth and final Civitas Saturday discussion of the 2008-2009 school year.

We discussed topics ranging from piracy to theft in schools; from the benefits of summer vacation to whether Civitas is a biased liberal organization.  Thanks to everyone for participating; we'll be back for much more next year.

We now move into the Urban Go Team phase and the first meeting of Go-Team will be Saturday, April 24 at Crossroads College Preparatory School (map) from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

Remember, if you want to be in Go-Team and have not yet submitted your paper work, do so!

Click here for more photos from last Saturday's discussion.
