In a surprise move, Civitas has announced that thirteen students who wrote outstanding essays for the Pulitzer Center contest for high school students will be receiving an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC on July 12-14. It will be a "working trip" with a fair measure of pleasure. The focus will be on training by the staff of the Pultizer Center for students to learn more about journalism and how to strengthen the Global Gateway program at their schools.
The thirteen students are:
| Hope Bretscher | Parkway West, 2011 | | Niki Esser | St. Joe's, 2011 | | Kelsi Feltz | Lindbergh, 2010 | | Marc Fernan | S.L.U.H., 2011 | | Rosemary Howell | St. Joe's, 2010 | | Olivia Huddleston-Boatman | Metro, 2012 | | Haroon Ikram | Soldan, 2009 | | Sonya, McCanna | Nerinx, 2011 | | Claire Meyer | Nerinx, 2010 | | Harold Norman | Soldan, 2010 | | Martha Orlet | Nerinx, 2011 | | Maria Sanchez | Nerinx, 2012 | | Gulmakai Zulmai | Soldan, 2009 |
The agenda will include the Pulitzer training, a visit to the recently opened Newseum, a Potomac cruise from Georgetown to Alexandria, and a picnic at the home of Pulitzer director Jon Sawyer. Other activities are still being planned; we will inform you as they are finalized.
