Dear Bobbi,

Civitas Urban Go-Team Review

(More photos available by clicking here)

Sixteen students engaged in Civitas' Sixth Summer Urban Studies Go-Team last week.  The focus for the week was jobs, and how Americans are coping with the current economy.  Since we had activities lined up with a number of people whom we had not previously met, we were concerned about "bummers," but our presenters were terrific across the board.  Thanks to all of them.

Among the activities we did were:

  • Street Polling in Clayton on the Economy
  • Q&A with Linda Goldstein, mayor of Clayton
  • Tour of the Garment District in downtown St. Louis with Joan Suarez
  • Metro-East: How economic issues are being addressed in Collinsville and Granite City.  Meet with community officials including a woman who worked in steel mills for fifteen years and now runs tea room.
  • Housing Restoration in Old North St. Louis
  • Urban Farming in Old North St. Louis
  • Visit to Crown Candy Company
  • Tour of  GKN Aerospace Co. (adjacent to Boeing)
  • Tour of Danforth Plant Science Center
  • Tour of Alberici Enterprises (Green Deal)
The sixteen students in the program are:

Urban Go-Team was a success because .... we didn't have to use the item on the right.

Special thanks to a great staff: Gloria Bilchik, Bobbi Clemons, Lisa Granich-Kovarik, Rachel Kunce, and Arthur Lieber.

The first article on the Civitas Urban Go-Team appeared on-line yesterday in the Madison County Suburban Journal.  You can read Scott Cousins' article by clicking here.

Winners of the Pulitzer / Civitas essay contest (click here to read essays) who are going to Washington, DC July 12-14 met last evening with their parents and our chaperones (Kristen Collins from Parkway West, Kelly Moore from Soldan and Arthur Lieber and Bobbi Clemons from Civitas) for a preparatory session.   The focus of the trip will be students learning more about journalism, particularly international journalism, and how to share their information with other students and teaches at their schools.

D.C.-bound students and their parents meet for prep session last night with chaperones at St. Louis County Library.
