SwiftPageEmail Subject: Students Return from very successful trip to Washington, DC

Dear Bobbi,

Students Return from very successful
Pulitzer DC Trip

Note: Please don't minimize the significance of returning in light of the recent remarks by  Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin who suggested creating a plan for sending people on a one-way mission to Mars, saying it is four to 10 times more expensive for explorers to return to Earth.

Students meet with Fred Goldberg (front left), former commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, while in Washington, DC.  Besides learning about international relations and journalism, they became much more familiar with the U.S. tax code and how it influences public policy and each individual.

Thirteen students returned for a most successful trip to Washington, DC July 12-14.  The primary focus was journalism workshops with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, but students also met with former I.R.S. commissioner Fred Goldberg and had time for relaxation including a Potomac cruise.

The students collaborated with Pulitzer staff to develop enhanced strategies for the Global Gateway program to work even more effectively with participating schools.  The Global Gateway program provides opportunities for high school and middle school students to connect directly with journalists covering international stories.  Three times a year reporters come to St. Louis to meet with students.

Students were winners of the Pulitzer / Civitas essay contest on human rights issues facing women and children, both internationally and locally (

Chaperones on the trip were Kristen Collins from Parkway West, Kelly Moore from Soldan and Arthur Lieber and Bobbi Clemons, and Allison Reed from Civitas.  Most of the Pulitzer work was by Jon Sawyer, Janeen Heath, and Nathalie Applewhite.

Thanks to all for a terrific educational experience.  We will be posting more information on the trip through the remainder of the summer and beyond.
