Urban Go-Team 2009 Video Just Released
The 2009 Civitas Urban Go-Team examined and explored the job situation in the St. Louis metropolitan area.  We saw despair; we saw hope.  To the right is the link to a four and a half minute video of our experiences.

First Civ Discussion of 2009-10 on Sept. 5

Civitas promotes a host of activities, but informal discussions among students from different schools is always key to our work.   No homework, no tests, no papers; just good old-fashioned talk about items that are of interest to you and other students.

Our first discussion this year is Saturday, September 5 at Crossroads School in the Central West End (map) from 9:00 - 11:00 AM.  Our agenda for the day will include:

• Discussion on health care, international hot spots, school issues, whatever you like.
• Information on Pulitzer Center Global Gateway program.
• Information on Washington University Model U.N. (WUMUNS)
• Information on Civitas model U.N. in November

Eric Greitens to be Featured
on Tom Brokaw Aug. 26

Over the past year, Civitas has had the pleasure of working with Eric Greitens, director of the Center for Citizen Leadership and The Mission Continues.  He has been a relentless advocate for veterans, helping them find opportunities in areas of employment, reintegration to society, and enhanced health.  Eric has also been engaged in international humanitarian efforts; seeking to extend economic and social rights to the disenfranchised in developing countries.

Eric will be featured on Tom Brokaw's NBC evening news on Wednesday, August 26.  It airs in the Central Time Zone from 5:30 PM - 6:00 PM.  Our local NBC station is Channel 5.

We hope that you'll be able to see this special on Eric and join us in continued collaboration between the Center for Citizen Leadership and Civitas.

Pulitzer Ambassador Activities
Last Tuesday, Ambassador Niki Esser went with Bobbi and Arthur to the Danforth Plant Science Center.  The focus of the tour was on enhancing agricultural production in developing countries; just in line with hunger focus of the upcoming Pulitzer Global Gateway project.  If she has time, Niki will produce a short video on the experience.

Last Saturday, Civitas ambassadors learned about a working farm, "The Alfalfa Queen Farm" near Godfrey, IL.  This was arranged by Ambassador Kelsi Feltz and her mother Diane.

It was a remarkable learning experience as we learned a great deal about how the knowledge that we have gained from the Pulitzer web site and the Danforth Plant Science Center is being used in a Midwestern farm.

Ambassadors are in the process of producing several videos and an essay on the experience.  You can access more photos now by clicking here.

Responses to Survey on Civil Discourse
The question was:
Do you think that American democracy is threatened by the lack of civil discourse at some recent town meetings for members of Congress (i.e. are we threatened by rowdy participants)?
Results:
Here were a couple of comments:
  • Discussion is the lifeblood of our democracy and a powerful tool. I worry most about the manipulation of information to persuade the less informed, that is why we need to continue educating our children.
  • I think we need some re-education in the concept of "enlightened self-interest". Democracy is not all about the individual first.
