This past week, Pulitzer Global Gateway journalists Fred de Sam Lazaro and Sharon Schmickle visited nearly a dozen schools and spoke with close to 1,000 students about how problems in food production and distribution are causing global security problems. The presentations were with groups as small and intimate as eight students and as large as several hundred at Nerinx Hall High School and Washington University.
Students had prepared in advance by researching the project web site at http://pulitzergateway.org/food-insecurity/. The journalists responded to student questions and comments in advance, then during the school visits, and will continue to do so for the next several weeks.
We look forward to student write-ups on both the topic and the journalists' visit to St. Louis. Special thanks to Fred and Sharon who were terrific as were Jon Sawyer and Janeen Heath from the Pulitzer Center.

Students Visit "Methane to Megawatts" Quarry & Landfill
Last Saturday nine students went on a fascinating field trip to Maryland Heights to learn of a little-known cutting-edge project in St. Louis. Fred Weber Enterprises has a large limestone quarry which is also serves as a landfill. Using everything from modern hi-tech technology to the eating habits of insects, much of the trash is converted into methane gas over a period of several years. The methane is currently used to heat Pattonville High School and provide energy for other sources, but soon it will be used to power turbines to generate electricity for Ameren U.E. It was a fascinating trip; special thanks to Environmental Engineer Genevieve Bodnar (by the way, a graduate of Rosati-Kain) for being an outstanding tour guide.

Change the World; Choose A Country
Both our high school and middle school country selections for model U.N. are coming up. Middle School teachers will assemble at the Richmond Heights Community Center (map) on Monday, Oct. 12 at 4:00 PM to select countries for individual sessions. High school students will gather at Crossroads College Preparatory School (map) on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 9:00 AM for their country draft.
You can access a list of the 192 countries in the United Nations General Assembly by clicking here. High School students should know that we will be working with one plenary session (no committees); thus ensuring that there will be far more countries than usual selected.
You can learn more about how the country draft works by clicking here. We will have a flash presentation of how it works for next week's e-newsletter.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE FLIKS
Okay, Michael Moore is controversial. While he may be highly regarded by many progressives and disdained by many conservatives, nevertheless his is a conversation-maker. For that reason, we feel that providing an opportunity for students to see his just-released film, "Capitalism: A Love Story" will provide food for thought for people of all political persuasions.
We are offering an opportunity for students to see the movie (in a theater) this Friday evening. We'll meet at Civitas (map) at 6:00 PM for some quick pizza and then go to the West Olive Theater where it is showing at 7:00 PM. We pay for the admission fee; you pay for food at the theater.
If you plan on attending, please sign up by clicking here.
