Middle School M.U.N. Workshop Tomorrow
Tomorrow, November 18, almost 800 students will converge from 9:30-11:30 at the Khorassan Room in the Chase-Park Plaza Hotel (map) for the student workshop.   Students will learn generally about the role of the United Nations in the world and specifically about how our Model UN program works and their role within it. Activities for the morning will include an interactive PowerPoint, a budgeting simulation, and an energetic performance by the African dance and rhythm ensemble Creative Pandemonium. It’s a great way to kick-off our program, and we look forward to seeing everyone there!  We would like all schools to be present by 9:30 AM; you can arrive as early as 9:00 AM.

Things are in high gear in our Middle School Model UN program. In October, teachers from over 20 schools came together at The Heights and chose the countries they would represent at the spring General Assemblies. Once again, a varied and diverse group of countries will be present at our spring sessions. To check the country rosters, go to http://civitas-stl.com/middle_school_general

And as always, please feel free to email Lisa (granichkovarik@sbcglobal.net) or call her (314-865-4704) if you have any questions at all.

High School Model U.N. This Saturday
We have more information below, but here are six short things to know:

  1. The Model U.N. is this Saturday, November 21, from 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM (please arrive no later than 8:45 AM for registration).  It will be at Alberici Enterprises (map); the landmark being the wind turbine you see above and to the left.
  2. There will be a crisis simulation in the afternoon; something you won't be expecting.
  3. Extra Civitas points (this is new; check it out) will be given to anyone who (a) attends the model U.N. or (b) writes a workable resolution.
  4. Lunch (Pizza and beverages) is free to delegates; the whole experience is free.
  5. We have more information below about being a delegate including topic suggestions for resolutions.  Resolutions are the fuel that power the model U.N.; you can access some initial ones by clicking here.
  6. Thanks to all who came to our workshop last Saturday.  You can access photos by clicking here.

Help us spread the word at your school.  Click here to download a PDF flyer.  If you would prefer for us to print flyers and either send them to your school or give them to students at our Friday & Saturday activities this week, we will.

Last Friday Night's "Civitas Night at the Movies"

Last Friday evening, students came to the Civitas office and saw two seemingly unrelated movies about international issues:

  1. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Live the Bob -- a 1964 tragicomedy about an "eyeball-to-eyeball" nuclear confrontation.  Stars Peter Sellers (in three roles) -- trailer
  2. Broken Promises -- Documentary on limitations and failures of the United Nations over its first 60 years.  As much as we want to support the U.N., this perspective is important to see. --  trailer
The experience was enhanced by our new 50" television.  Our next movie should be on Friday evening, December 4.

More information on ....

Again, our High School Model U.N. is this Saturday, November 21, from 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM at Alberici Enterprises (map).  Please arrive by 8:45 AM.

There can be as few as one and as many as three delegates per country.  The results of the country draft are available by clicking here; if you do not have a country and want to participate, we would love to have you.  Just call us or e-mail us at info@civitas-stl.com.

An outstanding way to approach gathering information to be an effective delegate is to use our research sheet.  You can access it by clicking here.

All information is available in our Delegate Handbook accessible by clicking here.

You do need to submit a resolution for your country, but we welcome them.  Again, then can be submitted to info@civitas-stl.com, preferably as MS Word documents.

In the Delegate Book, you can find:

  • Resolution template on Page 18
  • Sample resolution in Page 19
  • Checklist for resolution on Page 20
  • Researching a resolution on Page 21
  • How To Tackle Funding Your Resolution on Page 22
  • Help! My Country Doesn't Have Any Problems on Page 23
  • Rules of Procedure on Page 36
  • Comparison of Dialogue and Debate on Page 39 (this is what makes Civitas' Model U.N. different from most others).
  • Highlights of U.N. Charter on Page 40
Resolution topics may include:
  • Women & Children's Rights
  • Coastal conflicts and environmental problems
  • "Loose nukes" (insecure nuclear weapons)
  • Much more
As we said above, resolutions are the fuel that power the model U.N.; you can access some initial ones by clicking here.

Remember, we would love to have your resolutions or other topcs; you'll get extra points for submitting a resolution to info@civitas-stl.com.

Finally, let us know if you have any questions or requests.
