Civitas Video:

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

This Saturday afternoon, December 5, we will have a very special event as students in Civitas programs will meet with veterans who have served in recent combat.  Civitas is collaborating with Eric Greitens' The Mission Continues, a support group for veterans, to promote discussion about the trying experiences that the veterans have had and questions that students, most of whom are too young to serve in the military, have.

We hope that it will be a robust interactive Q&A as each of us learn a great deal about one another.  Come prepared with good questions and the utmost of respect.

We'll meet at 1:00 PM at Crossroads (map) and wrap up by 3:00 PM.

Civitas Friday Night Movie: "Hotel Rwanda"
On Friday, December 4, we will be showing the movie "Hotel Rwanda" for three reasons:

  1. It's plain and simple a terrific movie.
  2. Our annual February conference will be on genocide, and this is an outstanding docu-drama about the carnage in Rwanda in the mid-1990s.
  3. The following afternoon (Dec. 5) we will be collaborating with Eric Greitens's The Mission Continues to have a conversation between students and veterans.
The movie will be at the Civitas office (map) from 6:00 PM - 9:30 PM.  We'll have pizza and cookies in the beginning and a discussion about the film at its conclusion.

We are now accepting applications for the February conference on genocide.  We will be distributing paper ones on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, but you can apply on-line by clicking here.  You can learn more about the conference by clicking here.

About Donating to Civitas

Civitas has a rather unusual approach towards contributions.   You can donate to Civitas, however, we do not want you to do so if (a) you feel under pressure to do so; (b) you do not have sufficient discretionary funds to afford it,  (c) you feel that you have insufficient information about our organization to make such a commitment, or (d) you feel overwhelmed by the constant barrage of requests for money and we're just adding to the clutter.

If none of the four conditions above are a deterrent to you, then we would deeply appreciate your support.  We work on a limited budget and almost all of our programs are free to students.  For those activities that cost, we provide financial assistance to those in need.

There are numerous foundations and corporation that support various non-profits.  We are grateful to those who have supported us.  It would be very beneficial to our programs if more such organizations contributed to Civitas.  Since we keep a low profile and try to be modest about whatever achievements we might have, we are not as well known as many other organizations.  If you are connected with or know of a foundation or corporation that engages in philanthropy, we would be most appreciative of any assistance you could give us in securing funds from those whose business it is to support non-profits.

Civitas is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization; your donations to us are not taxable to you.

If you wish to donate, click here to do so by credit card or send us a check at 10845 Olive Blvd., Suite #155; St. Louis, MO  63141.

Points
As most students know, we are giving points towards end-of-year rewards to students who attend ActiveCitizen360 activities and who are strong contributors.  As of this week, we are also giving points to those who open our newsletter and click on links.
