Powerful Presentation and Discussion with Mike Pereira of "The Mission Continues" Last Saturday

Last Saturday afternoon twenty-seven Civitas students and teachers met with Mike Pereira and his wife Georgia to discuss issues facing veterans. Mike has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan and now works with Eric Greitens' The Mission Continues. Mike openly shared thoughts and feelings about his personal experiences and the institutional nature of military life.
Questions covered a gamut of topics; Mike answered everything directly and often emotionally. He clearly had a powerful impact on all present.
At the conclusion of the presentation, he told us more about The Mission Continues and invited (but didn't pressure) students to join him in volunteer work in which veterans and civilians work side-by-side to help people in need. Nine students signed up to participate; we welcome more. If you're interested, please e-mail us.
Eight students were present from St. Joseph's Academy; six from University City High School; three from Fox High School in Arnold and one each from Kirkwood High School and Lindbergh High School.

Students Watch "Hotel Rwanda" at Civitas Night at the Movies
Last Friday evening, seventeen students came to the Civitas office to see the movie "Hotel Rwanda". It is a powerful film about the genocide in Rwanda in the mid-1990s and the work of one individual to take risks to save over 1,200 civilians.
The film helps set the ground for our annual February conference on genocide.
We are now accepting applications for the February conference on genocide. You can learn more about the conference by clicking here and apply on-line by clicking here.

About Donating to Civitas

Civitas has a rather unusual approach towards contributions. You can donate to Civitas, however, we do not want you to do so if (a) you feel under pressure to do so; (b) you do not have sufficient discretionary funds to afford it, (c) you feel that you have insufficient information about our organization to make such a commitment, or (d) you feel overwhelmed by the constant barrage of requests for money and we're just adding to the clutter.
If none of the four conditions above are a deterrent to you, then we would deeply appreciate your support. We work on a limited budget and almost all of our programs are free to students. For those activities that cost, we provide financial assistance to those in need. There are numerous foundations and corporation that support various non-profits. We are grateful to those who have supported us. It would be very beneficial to our programs if more such organizations contributed to Civitas. Since we keep a low profile and try to be modest about whatever achievements we might have, we are not as well known as many other organizations. If you are connected with or know of a foundation or corporation that engages in philanthropy, we would be most appreciative of any assistance you could give us in securing funds from those whose business it is to support non-profits. Civitas is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization; your donations to us are not taxable to you. _____________________________________________ If you wish to donate, click here to do so by credit card or send us a check at 10845 Olive Blvd., Suite #155; St. Louis, MO 63141.
