Change of Movies for this Friday
Let's face it, there are no happy movies about genocide, nor should there be. With our Feb. 19-20 Genocide Conference approaching we will have plenty of somber material for students to review, especially at our prep sessions on Jan. 30 and Feb. 13.
We thought that we would stay with a political theme, but add some humor to the equation. "Wag the Dog" is such a movie. If we tell you anything more about it we run the risk of ruining it for you. Suffice it to say, the film is this Friday, January 29, at the Civitas office (map). We'll have pizza starting at 6:00 PM and begin the movie shortly thereafter. Things will wrap up at 9:30 PM. You can sign up for the pizza and movie by clicking here.

First Prep Session for Genocide Conference this Saturday
We will gather at Crossroads School (map) this Saturday from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM [note that this is not our usual time] for the first of two prep sessions for our genocide conference titled "Why Does 'Never Again' Seem to Happen so Frequently Again?" Lisa has edited an excellent PowerPoint overview of the topics with valuable background material and excellent questions. We'll have time for both discussion and for students to engage in individual on-line research.
The second prep session will be two weeks later, on Sat., Feb. 13, also at Crossroads, but this time in the morning (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM). Students will be able to share individual research about genocide and engage in more study and discussion.
The conference is Feb. 19 - 20 at Spazio's / Comfort Inn in Maryland Heights (map).
Special Note: Jane Garvin, teacher at St. Joseph's Academy, has sent us information about an optional follow-up activitiy to the conference. The would be a program for students on Fri., April 9 at Maryville University on "Genocide Revisited, Healing for Tomorrow." Click here to see the flyer.
