Students Plan to Launch Coalition for Coexistence
It started as a possible name for a new international organization to replace the United Nations. It evolved into the name of a student group in St. Louis to raise community awareness about the horrors of genocide and to inform legislators and the media of students' deep concerns about the issue.
Last weekend twenty-two high school students gathered at the Comfort Inn in Maryland Heights to try to answer the question, "Why Does 'Never Again' Happen Again?" On Friday evening they wrestled with a host of questions called conference starters. They then broke into three subcommittees; one to study possible ways of intervention into a genocide; one to look at ways to promote healing following a genocide; and a third to explore ways to educate more people about the existence and significance of genocide.
In the weeks ahead we will publish findings from the conference. Six students are writing articles for the Beacon; if they are accepted and published, we will give you links to them.

Middle School Teachers Choose Resolutions
The middle school teachers converged at The Heights on Monday and set the groundwork for productive General Assemblies in the spring! The meeting touched on a number of issues; we discussed how to facilitate the students’ evaluation of resolutions, debriefed on the procedure for buses at the General Assembly sessions, and even touched on the topic of placard size. No stone was left unturned. At the end, teachers met together and set the agenda of resolutions for their General Assemblies. As always, cooperation and good will prevailed, and the line-up of resolutions is a diverse one. Now comes the hectic part! Over the next few weeks teachers will be submitting rough drafts for Civitas staff to review and offer feedback on, with the goal of final drafts being complete and posted two weeks prior to their General Assembly. It’s hard to believe our first session is only about a month away!
