Pulitzer "Fragile States" Project A Success
Students at University City High School listending to Lisa Armstrong
Journalists Lisa Armstrong, Andre Lambertson, and Jason Motlagh came to St. Louis to meet with high school, middle school, and college students and share their experiences in fragile states.
Lisa and Andre primarily shared their experiences in Haiti. Their focus was on human interest stories following the January 12 earthquake. Students were able to see Andre's photographs and video and learn about the unique experiences that both of them had three weeks following the earthquake. They will be returning several times this year to follow-up on their reporting; Andre left for Haiti the day after leaving St. Louis and Lisa went yesterday.
Jason Motlagh discussed his reporting from Afghanistan where he has focused on civilian casualties. This was a very difficult assignment, especially considering that he was frequently embedded with American soldiers. His reporting as well as that of Lisa and Andre reflected how important it is for journalists to build trust with the people they are covering and to respect the cultures from which they are reporting.

We very much look forward to three more Pulitzer Global Gateway projects next school year.

Students Take "City to River" Field Trip
It's very odd that St. Louis' front door is in many ways its back door. If you don't believe this, follow the steps of a group of Civitas students who took a "city to river" walking tour from Busch Stadium to Laclede's Landing last Saturday. You can't take a familiar route; you have to walk down Spruce to Memorial Drive and then go north to Eads Bridge to see and hear how disconnected our downtown is with the Arch grounds and the Mississippi River. Majestic hotels completely turn their backs on the most well-known edifice in St. Louis and the river that gives it special meaning.
With wonderful guidance from Rick Bonash, Paul Hohmann, and Tristan Walker of the "City to River," students walked the walk and got the inside scoop on possible plans to reverse forty-five years of isolation. The trio would be among the first to acknowledge that they may not have all the answers, but they are willing to challenge established thinking and try to seize an opportunity that fortunately the National Park Service is presenting to our community. We hope to continue to give Civitas students chances to follow the process. You can access photos from Saturday's field trip by clicking here.
In the meantime, more information on plans to link downtown to the Arch grounds and Mississippi River is available by clicking here.
This Saturday, May 8, we will be visiting a LEED platinum certified builidng housing the William A. Kerr Foundation. It is an excellent example of revitalizing an existing structure in a transition area close to downtown. Meet at Crossroads (map) at 9:00 AM; we'll take MetroLink back and forth to the Laclede's Landing stop, and return to Crossroads at noon. You can sign up for the field trip on the Civitas web site by clicking here; if you prefer Facebook, click here.
