Survey Results:
on the Mosque in New York and
the Rally in Washington

Thanks to everyone who took our survey on First Amendment Rights vis-a-vis the proposed mosque and community center in NYC and the Glenn Beck rally in DC.  Support for First Amendment rights ranged from 88% to 96%.  Respondent were divided about whether they would support building the mosque and community center two blocks from Ground Zero.  Only 12% thought that Tony LaRussa was correct in assetting that the Glenn Beck rally was not political.  Thanks to everyone who thoughtfully contributed most engaging comments.

New survey on how generations view one another
Students had a most thoughtful conversation on this topic last Saturday.    A recent report on the CBS Evening News cited a study from Germany that indicated that "older people" (by their definition 50 or older) prefered "bad news stories" to "good news stories" about young people.  At the same time, most young people did not like any news stories about "older people."  What are your thoughts on this?  You can access the survey by clicking here.

Engaging High School Discussion last Saturday
Thanks to all the students who came to last Saturday's first high school discussion of the year.  Our topics included First Amendment issues related to last week's survey and generational perceptions of one another, covered in today's survey.

We had some wonderful new students; we hope to continue to make our activities attractive to you.  On Sat., Sept. 18 we have a field trip to see proposals for enhancement of the Arch grounds.  We have a movie the evening before (Sept. 17) and the next discussion group is Sat., Oct. 2.  Click here for more photos from last Saturday.

Special Field Trip to Arch to View Competition for new Riverfront Designs
St. Louis is moving ahead with plans to connect downtown St. Louis with the Arch grounds, with the riverfront, and to East St. Louis.  Five architectural firms submitted their plans last week and their designs are on display at the Arch.

ActiveCitizen360 will morph Discussion Group #2 on Saturday, September 18 into a field trip to the arch to see the designs.  Please note that this activity will end at noon rather than the previously announced 11:00 AM.  Students should meet at Crossroads (map) at 9:00 AM.

One of the key issues related to the designs is whether to replace the "depressed lanes" of I-70 between the Arch grounds and downtown and replace them with a wide boulevard with numerous locales to easily cross from downtown to the Arch grounds.  You can read more about that at the City-to-River web site and an interesting article on it by Gloria Bilchik in the Occasional Planet.  Feel free to add your comments.
