Conference on Immigration and Refugees
this Saturday
Each February, Civitas sponsors a conference for high school students on international issues.  In 2012, the conference is on immigration and refugees and is on Sat., Feb. 25, from 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM at Alberici Enterprises (map).

In all parts of our planet, there are individuals who are being abused and feel compelled to leave their native land.  There ae others who are forced to leave due to climate change when they lose arable land or where overpopulation occurs.  There are other people who are comfortable in their present location, but want to move to another venue for reasons ranging from reuniting with a relative to pursuing opportunities for a new job.

We will examine all of these issues in the conference.  Much of our work will be done in small groups so everyone interested will have ample opportunities to engage in the discussion.

Outstanding presenters at final prep Ssssion for conference last Saturday

Our second and final prep session for the People on the Move: Refugees, Immigration and Shifting Populations conference was last Saturday, Feb. 18.

We had an outstanding panel of presenters including  Vanessa Crawford from Missouri Immigrant & Refugee Advocates [MIRA], Jean Abbott from the Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma, and Ryan Fitzpatrick from the Interfaith Legal Services for Immigrants.

We covered a variety of issues including the legality and logic behind immigration policy as well as the many obstacles to facing a law-abiding and well-meaning individual or family that wants to move from one country to another.

Thanks to our terrific speakers and to the wonderful students who asked insightful questions and provided valuable information from their own experiences.
