How the Country Draft Works

Each year, high schools in the Gateway Model United Nations "draft" or select the countries which they will represent. In 1997, the draft will be held on September 27 at Crossroads School at 9:00 AM.

Here is how the draft works:

1. Each school picks from a hat a piece of paper with a number on it.

2. After each school has chosen its number, a "trusted member of our Secretariat" will select one number from another hat containing the same numbers.

3. Whatever school matches the "magic number" chosen by the member will then have the first selection in the draft. The remainder of the drafting order will be determined by the order of schools with numbers higher than the "winning" school. For example, suppose the magic number is ‘12’. The school which has ‘12’ will go first, ‘13’ will go second, ‘14’ will go third, and so forth. Once the highest number is reached, the order resumes from ‘1’ up to ‘11’. On a small scale, notice the chart below where the number selected (magic number) is ‘3’.:

4. After the first round, the order of selection will be reversed in the second round. This is minimize the "penalty" which schools with ‘poor numbers’ experience. The drafting ordered will be reversed in each subsequent round.

5. Each school selects countries for as many rounds as it wants countries. In each subsequent round, only the schools wanting more countries select.

Note: Remember, Security Council countries will most likely only be available in the first round.
