Letter to 8th Grade Teachers as Follow-Up to November 3, 1997 Meeting

November 17, 1997

Thanks so much to all teachers who came to our meeting at the UNA office on November 3. We made a lot of headway in determining which schools would meet on which dates and who would represent what countries.

We were also very fortunate to have Bill Ramsey of the St. Louis Human Rights Action Service address us about global human rights issues – particularly those which are most relevant to students. Bill provided considerable information about "A Consumer’s Guide to Holiday Shopping". You may well want to contact Bill at 725-5303 and ask him to come to your school and meet with your students.

As a follow-up, we’ve enclosed a copy of an article from the Los Angeles Times by David Meggyesy (former linebacker of the St. Louis Football Cardinals) on celebrities and sports endorsements.

Also enclosed is a listing of the dates when each school will be participating in the model UN and the countries which they have selected. We were able to accommodate about 90% of the country requests from the schools; unfortunately we had to go with some second and third choices because of more than one school wanting the same country.

Please review the list. If you would like to request any changes, additions, or deletions, please let us know. In the meantime, you can start working with your students in researching the countries. Again, our web site at www.civitas-stl.com and the UNA’s web site at http://info.csd.org/unastl/ are excellent gateways to country information.

Our next meeting is on Monday, January 12, 1998 – once again at the UNA office and from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM. We’ll focus at that meeting on sharing information about human rights and working on the process of having student write their resolutions.

We have begun our visits to participating schools and have a number of others scheduled. If you would like to arrange for a time for us to come to your school, please call us at 367-6480.

Have a good holiday season! May someone else do your dishes!

Hang in there!

Sincerely yours,

Arthur H. Lieber
