11 October 1997
Dear Middle School Model UN Teacher,
Thanks to everyone who came to our October 6 meeting. We seem to have a lot of enthusiasm this year, and when you combine that with a "running time" of about half an hour for the meeting things seem to be off to a quick start.
Enclosed with this mailing are the following.
- Updated brochure with revised meeting dates and a more current list of schools.
- A spreadsheet with tentative student counts for each school as well as an initial mock-up of dates for MUN sessions.
- List of the 185 current members of the United Nations. Please come to the next meeting with a list of the countries you would like to represent. (Note re. the list: Zaire is now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo).
Our next get-together is on Monday, November 3, at the UNA Headquarters (121 So. Meramec, 10th Floor) [map]. Well start at 4:00 PM and go about an hour. Our agenda includes the following:
- Presentation by Bill Ramsey, Director of the Human Rights Action Service in St. Louis. Bill will talk about key human rights issues with a special focus on boycotts of items which might be holiday gifts and are made under slave-labor conditions in developing countries. Bill will have a lot of material which you can bring to your students.
- Final determination of the dates when each school will be participating in the MUN.
- The country draft for each of these MUN dates.
- Anything else needing immediate attention.
Call me at 367-6480 if you have any questions. Hang in there!
