for 8th Grade Model U.N. Teachers

                                                                                                                                24 August 2000

 Dear Teachers and Staff,

Once again, summer has ended way too soon for all of us.  Maybe the American Civil Liberties Union will take up the cause of honoring the basic right of all students and teachers to have a three-month summer vacation.  Then again, maybe they won’t.

Anyhow, reality calls and we’re gearing up for what we hope is a terrific 8th Grade Gateway Model U.N. year.  We’ve worked over the summer to develop some new PowerPoint presentations and to explore options with you whereby your students could use more audio-visual aids during the presentations at sessions.  However, we don’t want to reduce the number of resolutions that students can debate at each session.  All of this needs discussion and we can talk about this and much more at our first meeting of the year.

That first Faculty Advisors Meeting will be on Monday, October 2, at 4:00 PM, at the UNA headquarters at 121 So. Meramec (10th Floor) [map enclosed].  This will be the time for us to go over the framework of the program and initiate improvements.  Please bring your suggestions along.  We will also work on scheduling our classroom visits.  As always, our meetings will last no more than an hour, because boredom happens.

Proposed dates for subsequent faculty meetings can also be worked out then.  Currently, those suggested dates are Monday, November 6; Monday, February 26, and a final follow-up meeting in late April (we have one less meeting time this year).

Arrangements have been made with the Creve Coeur Government Center for facilities this year.  Our 2001 dates will be:

Wed. March 14
Wed., March 21
Wed., March 28
Wed., April 4
Wed., April 11
Wed., April 25

World events should make this an outstanding year for the 8th grade MUN.  More and more concern is being raised globally about how the United Nations might more capably handle human rights and economic & social issues.  We look forward to having your students deeply engaged in the discussions.

Our outstanding staff member Patsy King is currently on maternity leave.  We will miss her during the period that she is gone.   In the meantime, we have hired Gretchen Haupt, one of our most outstanding high school seniors from last year.  She will be working in organization, classroom visits, and chairing.  She is not only a four year veteran of our M.U.N., but also a four-year veteran of the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago.

Take care and call us if you have any questions.

Sincerely yours,

Arthur H. Lieber & Gretchen Haupt
