GATEWAY MODEL U.N.  -- Session of Frivolity

Saturday, February 3, Crossroads School (map), 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

 Frivolous: adj

Traditional French Toast1 a : of little weight or importance

Past years have placed Gateway’s Frivolous Model UN session the weekend after our participation in MUNUC (the Model United Nations at the University of Chicago).  The topics presented during MUNUC debate are often of a highly serious nature and are important issues that weigh heavily on the international community.  This year, MUNUC coordinators have shifted the conference dates to a week later, so Gateway has adjusted its silly session to the weekend before departing for Chicago (February 3, 2001).  Nevertheless, the break in solemnity is always welcome.

b : having no sound basis (as in fact or law) <a frivolous lawsuit>

Generally, delegates pay strict attention to foreign policy, national sovereignty, and financial boundaries when tackling a global conflict or sticky political situation.  However, Frivolous MUN throws all those rules out the window (along with the French[1]).  One needn’t worry about the feasibility of a proposed resolution.  In the world of frivolity that we will have arrived in money won’t be an issue (Probably because it has all be turned into toast), and who ever looks at price tags when they’re daydreaming anyhow?

2 a : lacking in seriousness

As I mentioned before, our Frivolous session is a break in the solemnity of expected MUN proceedings.  This isn’t to say that our discussion on Feb. 3, 2001 won’t be without merit.  Of course it is important!  Every man, woman, and child should be allowed the comforts of a Lazy-Boyä recliner… it’s a basic human right!  In any event, we can put the rest of the world on hold for two hours (it’s not going to blow up without us) and indulge in a few moments silliness.  We have to prepare you for college after all.

b : marked by unbecoming levity

“Unbecoming levity,” makes it sound like it’s a bad thing… but then again, I suppose a motion for a conga line in the Security Council really wouldn’t be appropriate.  Of course there’s always room for a little fun, but for some reason it’s not always understood or appreciated.  That is why we’ve put aside a full two hours in February for absurdity, folly, foolishness, silliness, and any other goofiness you care to bring with you.  We look forward to the creativity and imagination that always seems to come hand in hand with the fertile minds on adolescents.

[1] A resolution passed at a previous Frivolous MUN stated that all French citizens were to be defenestrated (thrown out the window), however a specific window was never selected.
