For High School Faculty Advisors & Student Steering Committee

                                                                                                                                 21 September 2000

 Dear Teachers and Students,

Our 2000-2001 Gateway Model United Nations is off to a wonderful start with two excellent student steering committee meetings and one fine faculty advisor meeting.  Next ahead is the country draft.  This is when each school selects the countries that it will represent throughout the year.  A school may take as few as one country or as many as it has delegates to fill.  Enclosed with this letter are the following items that will help you in preparing for the country draft:

Ø       List of 189 member states of the United Nations.

Ø       List of current 15 members of the Security Council.

Ø       Explanation of How the Country Draft Works”

Ø       Information on Essay Contest with a prize of all-expenses paid conference on world peace in San Diego (not related to country draft).

Please check these items out so that you are prepared for the draft.  By the way, each delegation must have at least three delegates; one each for the following committees: (1) Political & Security, (2) Economic & Social, and (3) Human Rights.  In addition, since each school will have one Security Council country, it will need a fourth delegate for that country.

The country draft will be held at Crossroads School (500 DeBaliviere) [map] on Saturday, September 30, 2000 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM.  Besides the country draft, we will be available to answer any and all questions about the model U.N.  We’ll also have a “wherever we go” discussion group at the end if time permits.  In the week after the country draft, we will send out a list of countries and the schools that will be representing them.  We will also include our $60.00 bill per school since we’ll have an accurate list of all participating school.

One last item: we will be taking fourteen students to the Alabama Model United Nations [link] in Tuscaloosa, AL, October 18 – 21.  We may still have a few openings for delegates.  If you or any other student who you know is interested, please visit our web site at www.civitas-stl.com for more information.  You can then call us at (314) 367-6480 if they are interested in seeing if a slot opens up.

Thanks for everything and we look forward to seeing students and teachers at Crossroads on Saturday, September 30.

Sincerely yours,
