How the Country Draft Works

Each year, high schools in the Gateway Model United Nations "draft" or select the countries which they will represent. In 2001, the draft will be held on September 29 at Crossroads School at 9:00 AM.  There is one basic change for the 2001-2002 school year.

In previous years, some of the more active countries in the United Nations such as the United States or Israel have been represented by schools that have shown minimal interest in the M.U.N.  As a result, these countries have not been represented up to the standards that are needed for the best of debate and discussion.

In an effort to further ensure that these and other vital countries are represented by schools that have delegates who participate in a variety of our activities, we will allocate the first fifteen slots in the draft to the following schools that have been most engaged in our 2001-2002 programs to date:

1.      Crystal City High School

2.      Gateway High School

3.      Hazelwood Central High School

4.      Hazelwood East High School

5.      Lindbergh High School

6. Maplewood Richmond Hts.

7.      Metro High School

8.      Nerinx Hall High School

9.      Notre Dame High School

10.      Parkway North High School

11.  Riverview Gardens High School

12.  Rosati-Kain High School

13.  Soldan Internat’l Stud. High School

14.  University City High School

15.  Vashon High School

Here is how the draft works:

  1. The name of each participating school in the Model U.N. will be written on a piece of paper and placed in a hat.  Priority will be given to the fourteen schools that have been active participants in the program so far in 2001-2002.
  2. A "distinguished" member of our secretariat (staff) will draw a piece of paper from the hat.
  3. The name of the school on that piece of paper will be the school that has the first draft pick of the day.
  4. The staff will continue to pull pieces of paper out of the hat and the drafting order will be determined by the order in which the names are pulled.
  5. The first round of the draft will then take place.  The first fifteen countries will be those listed above.  In the first round, all schools will be allowed to select a country that will be on the Security Council.  Since there are only fifteen members on the real Security Council (five permanent and ten non-permanent), we will allow other countries to serve on the Security Council so that there will be one for each school.  After the first fifteen real Security Council members are taken, we will then work to maintain a geographical balance of the other new members.  List of 15 Security Council members.  List of 189 General Assembly members.
  6. After the first round, the order of selection will be reversed in the second round.  This is to minimize the "penalty" on schools that drafted late in the first round.
  7. The drafting order will be reversed in each subsequent round.
  8. Each school selects countries for as many rounds as it wants countries.  In each subsequent round, only the schools wanting more countries will select.
  9. Time permitting, following the draft, we will have a regular discussion group.
