Dear Arthur,
On the high school front, our third and final preparation
session for MUNUC is this Saturday. On the
eighth grade front, we report the postponement of a
meeting scheduled for later in January. All this, and
more, in today's newsletter!
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also

current information, and through the year we will be
working on building up our archives from previous
years.

MUNUC Prep Session #3 This Week |
|
The third and final preparation session for
MUNUC (Model U.N. of the University of
Chicago) will be on Saturday, January 25 at Crossroads
School (map below). The prep session will be from
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. The first hour will be a simulation
for MUNUC; the second hour will be the
viewing of a "Twilight Zone" related to global issues,
and the third hour will be a free and open discussion on
topics of the students' choices. Outstanding
refreshments will once again be available.
We thank everyone who previously submitted their
position paper. If you have not done so yet and you
can fit it into your priorities, please bring your position
paper to our meeting on January 25. As stated
previously, we are less concerned about the quality or
authenticity of your position paper than we are about
your efforts towards learning about your country and
the issues before your committee. We know this is
something we cannot really measure, but we hope that
you share the goal of learning rather than just cranking
out words. The issues before the committees of
b>MUNUC this year are very thoughtful ones.
Those of you representing Ethiopia will have definite
interests to defend or advance. Those representing
the Seychelles will be more flexible to play the roles
of "peacemakers." We hope that you are in the
process of reading and thinking creatively about your
countries and the issues before the committees.
Links to more information about writing position papers
available at the bottom of this article.
We are sending out a "snail mail" today with a special
liability form that MUNUC wants each student
to complete and submit. Please fill out the short form
with a parent or guardian and bring it to this Saturday's
meeting. We will then immediately send them up to
Chicago.
For those students paying full fare for the trip, please
remember to bring your final $140.00 payment of the
trip on January 25. If you have any questions about
that, please do not hesitate to contact us.

8th Grade Teacher Meeting Postponed from Jan. 27 to Feb. 24. |
|
REMINDER: 8th grade teachers: we have a previously
scheduled meeting for Monday, January 27, 2003.
When we scheduled this meeting, we were hoping to
have most of our classroom visits for the year
completed so that students would be able to submit
resolutions for the spring conferences. We were also
hoping that there could be preliminary debate of these
resolutions on-line.
Unfortunately, we have not moved at a fast enough
pace to accomplish this goal. No problem. We are
postponing the meeting from January 27 to Monday,
February 24, 2003 at the UNA headquarters from 4:00
PM - 5:00 PM. By that time we will have visited
virtually all schools and we will all be in a position to
select the resolutions for each of the six sessions. We
will still have a full month for on-line debate if that is
the will of the teachers and students.
We are sending out a "snail mail" today with more
information on this change of dates.
