Dear Bobbi,

The Olympics are over, having set a tone consistent with the United Nations. We are now awaiting to see if the Republican party supports the U.N. in this week's convention.

Last Saturday, Civitas had its first discussion group of the 2004-2005 school year. We had twenty enthusiastic students and look forward to more in our September 11 discussion.

Last Week's Discussion

The 2004-2005 Civitas "season" began last Saturday, August 28, with a discussion group for high school students. It was held at Crossroads School (500 DeBaliviere).

The discussion was very lively, with most of our time spent on the issue of whether it is desirable to have a presidential candidate who has served in the military. Is not serving in the military a problem for a candidate?

We also discussed whether in evaluating a political candidate, it's important to consider, the behaviors and actions of the candidate when he / she was "young.".

No Meetings this Weekend

We want to remind all teachers that the previously scheduled teachers' meeting this Saturday has been cancelled. Instead, we are combining the teachers' meeting with a student discussion group on Saturday, Sept. 11.

In the past, some of our high school teacher meetings have been somewhat dry. That is why we are combining a teacher meeting with a student meeting. We'll spend a little time on organizational activities and more time on discussions related to both international and domestic issues.

Discussion Group for Teachers & Students on Sat., Sept. 11

For the first time in Civitas history, we are having a discussion group in which high school students and teachers will both participate. This will be on Saturday, September 11, at Crossroads School (map link below) from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. We are having this joint meeting to provide new opportunities for students and teachers to get to know one another. The conversation will be quite informal; we want everyone to toss out their ideas, no matter how unconventional they may be.

Meeting of Middle School Teachers

We have found it helpful to have our first middle school teachers' meeting in September. This year it is going to be on Monday, September 13. Frankly, this meeting will be similar to previous first meetings of the year, so experienced teachers get a "free pass" from this meeting. However, if you are new to the program or feel that you could benefit from more orientation, please come to the meeting.

It will be held on the 10th floor of the World Trade Center at 125 Meramec in Clayton. A link to a map appears below.

This Week's Survey

Labor Day is traditionally considered the beginning of a presidential campaign. We all know that in today's world, the election cycle actually begins on Labor Day -- of the year before the election!

If the election were held today, for whom would you vote?
