Dear Arthur,

Our 2-Q-S (Two Question Survey)

It's the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year.  We want to know what month of the school year is the most "grinding" one for you?

What is the Most Difficult Month of the School Year for Students

Results from last week's survey:

Terrific High School Discussion Last Saturday

Thanks to the thirty-three high school students who came to last Saturday's first discussion of the year.  It was only fitting that most of the discussion centered on schools: issues of coed vs. single gender; public vs. private; large vs. small; etc.  We also talked about schools' receptiveness to "controversial" issues such as sex education and military recruiters on campus.

Students who attended were from C.B.C., Lindbergh, Maplewood-Richmond Heights, Metro, Parkway North, Rosati-Kain, S.L.U.H., St. Joseph's Academy, and Webster Groves.

Our second discussion of the year is this Saturday, September 8.  It also will be at Crossroads (If you have a suggested topic please e-mail us a
t [email protected].   Hope to see you there!

High School Faculty Advisors ..... our first and only meeting for you (because we know that your spare time is sparse and precious) is a week from this Saturday, September 8, at Crossroads.  This is a 'two-fer' with student discussion going on from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM and the faculty advisor meeting from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM.  We'll go over your limited responsibilities (except those involved in the Global Gateway project with the Pulitzer Center) and answer any and all questions.  Your welcome to stay for the second hour of discussion with students.

Something new that we are doing for high school teachers this year:

We will be using an additional method of communicating with you this year about our high school model U.N. events.  You may have heard of MEETUP.COM - an online site that allows various organizations to communicate directly, efficiently, and interactively with members.  We just established a new MEETUP.COM group for high school teachers involved in Civitas Activities.  It is called Civitas Staff and Faculty Advisors.  You can access it by going to http://teachers.meetup.com/136/.  Please note to NOT include the www.

We will send you direct invitations on Wednesday, September 5 to join the meetup group.  We ask that if you don't have any objections, you simply accept the invitation and join.  You will then have easy access to the calendar of events for Civitas high school events.

Sometimes we will send you reminders that will come in the form of "invitations."  Don't let that worry you; with the exception of this Saturday's meeting we are not expecting you to come to any of the meetings.  However, the invitation allows you to RSVP.  The unique component to this is that you can say that you're not coming, but you have guests who are coming.  These guests would be students from your school who are involved in our activities.  Simply RSVP by saying "NO" for yourself and then enter the number of students from your school that you expect to attend.  We don't expect this to be terribly accurate, but it should give us a general idea.  We ask that if possible you try to determine how many students might be coming.  If it's a busy time and you can't, we understand.

More info on this is forthcoming.

First Middle School Teacher Meeting on September 10

                    ,

Report from Lisa Granich-Kovarik, Middle School Model U.N. Coordinator:

It's hard to believe summer vacation is already winding down!  I hope you had a wonderful break and are ready for a new school year.  Before things get too hectic, I wanted to check in with all of you about your participation in the Middle School Model United Nations program.

  • First, are you interested in participating in Model UN this year?  I hope so!  Please let me know if you'll be participating in the program by emailing me () or calling me (865-4704 or 367-6480).  Please do this as soon as possible (it should just take a minute).  If you can give me a ballpark figure of how many students you think will be participating, that would be helpful. Also, if you know of any other middle school teachers who might be interested in the program, please pass along their names and contact information to me so that I can speak with them.
  • Second, I wanted to let you know what the important dates are for this year's program.
    • Monday, September 10: (4:00-5:00, Richmond Heights Community Center) This meeting will provide an overview of the program for the year so it is important that all teachers new to Model UN attend.  It's purely optional for teachers who have participated in the program already.
    • Monday, October 15: (4:00-5:00, Richmond Heights Community Center) mandatory meeting for all teachers in the program.  We'll be choosing our countries, General Assembly dates, and finalizing plans for the student workshop.
    • Friday, November 16: (9:30-11:30, Chase-Park Plaza) student workshop
    • Monday February 25: (4:00-5:00, Richmond Heights Community Center) mandatory teachers' meeting.  We'll be deciding on resolutions for the General Assemblies and discussing final preparations for the sessions.
    • Wednesdays in April, first two weeks of May: (9:00-12:00 Creve Coeur Government Center) Spring General Assembly sessions.
  • Finally, has any of your contact information changed?  If your email address or phone numbers at school or home have changed, it would be very helpful if you could pass along that information to me.

I enjoyed working with all of you last year-I hope you're on board for this year as well!  I think we'll have a terrific year.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Lisa Granich-Kovarik
