Dear Arthur,

Before our regular news, we want to urge you to vote in today's presidential primaries in MO / IL, so long as you have a candidate to your liking.  If you need an assistance or are concerned about any improprieties, please call Denise Lieberman from Missouri Voter Protection Advocate at (314) 780-1833.  You can also access the Missouri Voter Bill of Rights by clicking here.

  • Look for the new Civitas web site later this week!

Thanks to the students who came to last Saturday's make-up prep session for the Civitas Active Citizenship project.  In prep session this Saturday, February 9 we will have fifteen community role models (listed below) who will be meeting with students.  The session is from 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM at Crossroads (map).  They will be discussing their experiences in cultivating, retaining, and refining a sense of global concern as they moved from high school students to adults with careers and families.  The expected speakers are:

  1. Paul April, Activist / teacher, St. Louis Public Schools
  2. Mike Baldwin, community activist (North St. Louis)
  3. Jeffrey Boyd, St. Louis Board of Aldermen (22nd Ward)
  4. Betsey Bruce, Political Reporter, KTVI-TV, Channel 2
  5. Elliott Davis, “You Paid for It,” KTVI-TV, Channel 2
  6. Nikki Doughty, Director of Admissions, City Academy
  7. Jackson Foote, Citizens for Missouri's Children
  8. Ginger Imster, Director of Development, City Academy
  9. Rachelle L’Ecuyer, Community Development, City of Maplewood
  10. Felicia Pulliam-Jones, Community Development, City of Kinloch
  11. Alvin Reid, City Editor, St. Louis American
  12. Jamala Rogers, Community Activist; Columnist, St. Louis American
  13. Jeff Smith, Missouri State Senator (4th District)
  14. Steve Sorkin, Community Activist
  15. Rachel Storch, Missouri House of Representatives (64th District)
The format (which is subject to tweaking) is that we will have two panel discussion with the participants, one beginning at 9:25 AM and the next at 10:30 AM.  We will have two twenty-five minute sessions of small group discussions, where three or four students meet with one of our adult guests and they have an informal question and answer exchange.

We are very appreciative to all the guests who will be joining us that morning.  While it is not our usual modus operandi to put pressure on or use guilt to motivate students to attend one of our events, we're having a difficult time restraining ourselves with this one.  We do as much as we can to engage you rather than bore you; this should be a real winner!

Essay Contest: Win Trip to Washington!

The St. Louis chapter of Citizens for Global Solutions is offering a free trip to Washington, DC for a student who submits the winning entry to their essay contest.  The topic is "Pursuing A Multilateral Foreign Policy for the Good of the World."  This is not your typical "compare and contrast" essay, so Civitas staff is available to help you get a grasp on the topic.

The trip is to Washington, DC on May 15-16 and includes participation in a student conference on international issues.  You will also have opportunities to get involved in the political process, including visiting the Washington offices of Senators McCaskill and Bond as well as your congressperson.

A complete description of the contest and trip is available by clicking here.
