Checklist for a Model UN Resolution

 

RESOLUTION TOPIC:

q The resolution addresses an important issue for the world community.

Is the resolution written in the perspective of your country?  What objections do you think other delegates might have to your issue?

 

PREAMBLE:

Principles that apply in this resolution:

q The principles the sponsors use are relevant.

Have the authors used parts of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to convince you of the importance of solving this problem?

 

Problems that exist:

q The sponsors back up their ideas with facts.

Do you believe their facts and statistics, or did your research turn up statistics that disagree with theirs?

 

q The sponsors convince you of the importance of the issue.

Do you agree with the reasons the sponsors give? What other reasons could be included?

 

OPERATIVE CLAUSES:

Operative clauses should include:

q A description of a new idea or program.

Have the sponsors described a new program that will address the problem?  Have the sponsors addressed who is responsible? 

 

q Funding.

Have the sponsors thought about how to pay for this solution? Do you think their idea will work? Does it provide enough money?

 

q Ways to make sure the solution works.

Have the sponsors included ways of making sure that the solution is carried out? Do they have a way of enforcing their program? Is the United Nations accountable for the program’s success or failure?

 

q Timeframe.

How long will the program last? Should it go on forever? Or, have the sponsoring countries included a way to evaluate it and either extend it or end it?
