Follow-Up from the Model UN AM Session

During the AM Session of the November 19th Model UN, delegates had time to debate 4 resolutions. (To see the full list of resolutions, click here) Here’s the record of the amendments and how the votes went. Photos from the session will be posted shortly.


GA-01: Amended & Defeated (14 Yes – 20 No – 6 Abstain)

Friendly amendments:

  • O.C.6: Monitor Russian & Chinese military actions. Ensure that they are not building up forces for non-peaceful actions for 5 years (Bosnia & Herz.)

Proposed amendments that didn’t make it:

  • O.C.5: If they’d like to annex Crimea, create a 3rd party watchdog to ensure no nuclear ambitions by China/Russian Federation. This will be funded by China & the Russian Federation. (Kaz.)
  • Strike Operative Clause 2 (Jordan)

GA-02: Amended & Defeated (17 Yes – 15 No – 8 Abstain)

Friendly amendments:

  • Maternal leave 6 months, fathers get 3 months
  • Countries are encouraged, but not mandatory
  • OC3: Exclude 25 poorest nations (Haiti)
  • Remove OC 4. (Kaz., USA, Cuba)
  • OC5: Each nation submits a resolution to ensure parental leave within their country. Failure to do so will lead to a 5% increase in dues. Dues will be lowered when they enact a plan. Countries unable to support this resolution can opt-out IF they prove that this will not economically work for them. (Bosnia)
  • OC1: Line 10, change from 1 year to up until the age of 11 (China)

 Proposed amendments that didn’t make it:

  • OC1: Change leave to 3 months (Colombia)
  • OC1: Change leave to 245 days (Switzerland)
  • Remove Clause 2 (Italy)
  • Remove Clause 3 (Italy)

 


GA-03: Amended & Passed (36 Yes – 2 No – 2 Abstain)

Friendly amendments:

  • Remove Russian Fed. from OC 3,5 (Russian Fed)
  • OC 3: Requires nations who refuse to accept refugees… (Austria)
  • OC5: Relocate Syrian refugees back to Syria when the civil war/crisis is over (Russian Fed)
  • OC5: Remove Singapore from OC5 (Singapore)
  • Remove South Korea from OC5 (South Korea)
  • OC7: Include other refugees, like the ones from Myanmar going into Thailand. (Thailand)
  • OC7: Funding/resources go to ANY country with 30,000 Syrian refugees requesting help. (Canada)
  • OC10: Create committee to oversee the movement of refugees, Refugee Equal Distribution Committee R.E.D.C. (France)
  • OC11: Mongolia will accept 1 million refugees (to be placed in camps) IF the UN pays for them. (Mongolia)

Proposed amendments that didn’t make it:

  • Remove China from OC3 (China)
  • Remove OC 4 (France)
  • Remove OC5 (Austria)

GA-04: Amended & Passed (25 Yes – 6 No – 9 Abstain)

Friendly amendments:

  • OC1: Partner with World Health Organization (Russian Federation)
  • OC5: Have inspectors evaluate safety/quality of clinics (UAE)
  • OC6: 30 wealthiest nations, 0.1% (USA)
  • OC7: When program expands, it can go anywhere in the world with high maternal mortality rates (Canada)
