Shocked that AIDs has caused Zimbabwe to have lower life expectancies for males and females both around 38 years old. AIDs  has also caused higher infant mortality and death rates around 200,000 people. It has also caused lower population and growth rates. The population growth rate is a mere 0.68%, and

Encouraged that although there is no way to stop AIDs, there is a way to help prevent this deadly disease from spreading,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

  1. Join in with Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV and AIDS (OAFLA) to help the people of Zimbabwe and other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone[BC1] .
  2. Ask that countries over $20,000 dues increase 0.75% [BC2] and that this money will be used by UNAIDS.
  3. 25% of the money will go to UNAIDS to help educate the people of Zimbabwe and southern Africa about the dangers and risks of AIDs.
  4. 50% [BC3] of the money would go to help fund research. The research would help find a cure for the AIDS virus and new medicines for those who currently have AIDs. This would be administered by UNAIDS. The other 50% would go towards HIV/AIDS prevention.
  5. The program will continue for three years.
  6. If this project is successful, we would ask that it spread to other countries affected by the HIV/AIDs epidemic.

 [BC1]Added Sierra Leone.

 [BC2]The dues were increased from0.5% to 0.75%.

[BC3]Was lowered from 75%.  They also added where the rest of the money would go.

Re:                              Lack of Water

Submitted to:             General Assembly

Submitted by:            Philippines

Date:                           April 30, 2008

Establishing in the PREAMBLE the principles that apply in the resolution:

Whereas Article 7 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “All are equal before the law and are entitled without discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.”, and

Whereas Article 25, section 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care, and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age, or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”, and

Noting that 17% percent (1.1 billion) of the world’s population is using unsafe water sources. The Philippines, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon, and Libya have land that is deserted in the oceans, which are all salt water, so they do not have a healthy drinking water. And also the water they drink may be polluted, and

Noting that 30 million people of the country’s 80 million people do not have access to potable water through public or commercial water supply and distribution operations; The lowest drinking water coverage rates are in sub-Saharan Africa (58 %), but the largest numbers of unserved people are in Asia, and

Alarmed that the people who drink this contaminated water could die or get sick, here are some examples-skin rashes, diarrhea, ear infections, meningitis, and many more,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

1.      Request that UN use .01% of their gross income to fund the “Countries In Need of Potable Water (CINPW)” that has the highest population per potable water sources.

2.      Install water spigots to the Philippines and other countries in need of potable water sources starting with the Philippines, India[BC1] , Iran, Iraq, Italy, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon, and Libya.

3.      Program will last 5 years.

4.      Program success will be evaluated in 5 years to see if the program will be reinstated for an additional 5 years.

5.      The funds will be distributed to the countries with the highest population per potable water source until 85% of that country’s population has access to potable drinking sources.

6.      If desalination of salt water is needed, a desalination plant will be installed at a price of 130 million US dollars per station which can produce 25 million gallons of fresh water a day. The plant would use reverse [BC2] osmosis. In reverse osmosis, high pressure pumps force salt water through fine filters that trap and remove waterborne salts and minerals.

7.      Doctors [BC3] will also be sent to the aforementioned countries to care for children with water born diseases.

8.      A [BC4] progress report to the GA will be sent every 18-24 months.

[BC1]Added India to the list of countries needing help.

[BC2]The General Assembly voted on and removed distillation from this resolution.
