Re:   Mental Stability in Times of Economic Crisis

Submitted to:  General Assembly

Submitted by: Greece

Date:   May 8, 2012

Establishing in the PREAMBLE the principles that apply in the resolution:

Whereas Article 23 section 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.”, and

Whereas Article 23 section 3 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.”, and

Whereas Article 25, section 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care, and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age, or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”, and

Astounded that 21.8 % of Greek citizens are unemployed, 24.4 % in Spain and 14.3 % in Ireland, and

Concerned that the economic downfall in 2009 caused mental health issues which led to more than 25% of Greek suicides by 2011, and that the new austerity measures forced Greek citizens to pay 22% more on monthly tax, and is affecting pension plans which is increased economic stress, and the economic reports are stating the Spain is now becoming the “new” Greece because we currently are seeing the same economic pattern in Spain, and

Currently the suicide mental health education in Greece has been focused on teenagers and not focused on adults plus this economic stress is a worldwide problem,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

1. The United Nations will begin a program called Life Is Valuable (LIV), in which groups of trained mental health professionals will travel to Greece, Spain, and Ireland to start therapy and to educate the adult population on symptoms of depression and the causes of adult suicide.

2. The objective of LIV is to prevent suicides by therapeutic sessions provided for adults experiencing debilitating stress due to the economic downfall.

3. LIV will send informational materials to persons who have been unemployed for six or more months through the mail and will also put the informational materials in public libraries and other public places in Greece, Ireland, and Spain.  The materials will contain information about the symptoms of depression and ways in which to contact LIV for help.

4. LIV will also design an informational website about depression and links to other agencies that can provide help.

5. LIV will be staffed by UN employees, and local officials who understand the economic conditions of the area. There will be twelve staffers per group and five groups per country.

6. LIV will be provided for 3 years. At that time the program will be revaluated by the General Assembly and if data proves that suicide rates have decreased, the program will be funded for another 3 years and expanded to other countries with high unemployment and increasing suicide rates.

7. To pay for LIV, the United Nations will raise dues of the ten wealthiest countries .01% raising 8,526,887 million dollars a year. This will pay for the staff, the transportation for the staff, and any educational materials needed. The United Nations will coordinate with programs already in place sponsored by the World Health Organization.

Re:   Landmines

Submitted to:  General Assembly

Submitted by: Jamaica

Date:   May 8, 2012

Establishing in the PREAMBLE the principles that apply in the resolution:

Whereas Article 3 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.”, and

Whereas Article 5 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”, and

Whereas Article 29 section 2 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order, and the general welfare in a democratic society.”, and

Recognizing that there are at least 108 countries that have landmines, and there are 110 million around the world, and

Taking into consideration landmines are invisible to humans because they are underground, but not invisible to the government because the government has tracking devices of where the landmines are placed, and

Keeping in mind 30,000 innocent civilians are being killed each year, and

Realizing the government put landmines in countries because of wars and enemies as guards, and even though the landmines are dangerous to the civilians,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

1. The United Nations will begin a program called The Landmine Sweepers.

2. The conference   about landmines will be headquartered in New York at the U.N. headquarters. It will be held at other places we also will be inviting anyone who is serious about removing landmines. So my goal for the meeting is to talk about how to get rid of the landmines and how we are going to solve this situation.

3. Our program will travel across the globe in different countries on live T.V. educating people to not step on landmines and how to remove them from the ground. I will also put up posters around neighborhoods so all civilians will be able to be inform. We also will be removing landmines for free. We will remove at least 500 landmines in 6 months. We will keep our association alive by our new generation doing what we did and also having fundraisers to help keep landmines out of countries by making sure the country doesn’t have problems with other countries so they won’t put landmines in that country. People who volunteer and U.S. soldiers will be the ones to remove landmines and will also be trained by the government.

4. We will pay for our company by having donations, by using our personal money, and by the government in different countries, and also we will raise the money by taxes out peoples checks but not a lot of their money. So when you pay for items at stores there will be an extra small fee for firearm equipment. We will raise $2 million dollars all together for the company.  It will cost $ 300,000 dollars to travel and $1 million dollars to get rid of a landmines and it will cost $1,000 to remove each landmines.
