Re.:   Equal Rights for Women in India

Submitted to:  General Assembly

Submitted by: India

Date:   April 16, 2013

Whereas Article 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”, and

Whereas Article 16 section 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage, and at its dissolution.”, and

Appalled that women at the age of 20 are considered sinful or unfaithful until they get married, and

Shocked that once a woman gets married they are now "owned" by their in-laws not their biological parents, and

Dismayed that 90% of marriages are arranged in India, and

Realizing that 75% of women are forced into marriage before the age of 18, to men of all different ages,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

1. The United Nations will create a program called WERM (Women's Equal Rights in Marriage) which will be focused in India.

2. WERM will help young women who are forced into marriage.

3. WERM will have volunteers sent out to find women that are forced into marriage.

4. If a woman who needs help is found, she will be granted legal help.

5. To create WERM, we request that dues are increased through the 20 wealthiest countries by 0.25%.

6. Women's Equal Rights in Marriage will last for 6 years and if at this time a decrease in forced marriage is achieved, it will be renewed for another 6 years. When this happens WERM will go to other regions as well as still in India.

7. Our lawyers for WERM will cost $284.00 per hour.

8. WERM is considering pressurizing the government into passing a law banning marriages under the age of 21. And if possible, banning forced marriages all together.

9. By spreading the word of WERM by advertising on television and possibly billboards, we will find volunteers to help with the association.

10. If the law passes and we find to be confronted with forceful husbands or parents that won’t end the marriage or won’t allow access to the wife, they will be taken to court for not following the “forced marriage” law.

Recognizing that it takes 5-10 years for a tree to grow back, and

Alarmed by more than half of the world’s timber and 72% of paper is consumed by 22% of the world’s population, and

Whereas in Ethiopia only 42% of the population has access to clean water, in Sudan only about 2% of water is available for domestic uses, and in Kenya only 62% of the population has access to clean water, and
