Nov. 26, 2001 Gateway Model U.N. Letter to
 Student Leaders & Faculty Advisors

With Thanksgiving over, we head into our final stretch of 2001.  We have one remaining major event for our high school program – our full day MUN session on Thursday, December 13, 2001.  It will be from 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM in the Student Center at Forest Park Community College (map).

The turnout for our Saturday session on November 17 was somewhat lacking.  We had no representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, and China.  We have contacted the schools that selected these countries in the September draft and warned them that if they cannot send delegates for these countries on December 13 that we will have other schools represent these three members of the Security Council.  So far, faculty representatives from two of the three involved schools have assured us that they will be there.  Most importantly, we need as many delegates as we can get from as many schools as possible.  We ask that faculty advisors and student leaders rally the forces in their schools so that we can have an outstanding session on December 13.  To the best of our knowledge, your country is «COUNTRY» and your committee is «COMMITTEE».  If either of these is blank, we do not have the information.  Please register.

Enclosed with this letter is an illustration of the committee structure for 2001-2002.  On the reverse side of that sheet is a list of the countries taken for the smaller committees and the number of remaining seats available.  You may apply to have representation on any of these countries where openings still exist.  We also need representation from every drafted country for the General Assembly.  All of this information is available for you on the web.  Another item on the web is a list of the students currently on our mailing list.  If you know any other student who wants to be on the list, please have them sign up on our web site.

We also have enclosed information on our February 1-2 conference on “That Was Then: This Is Now.”  It is about major U.N. charter reform issues.  The blue sheets provide explanation; the goldenrod sheet is an application form.  If you are interested, please complete the form and return it to us as soon as possible.  You may also sign up on the web.  This should be a terrific event; we urge students who want to take on the challenge and enjoy the fun to become part of the action.

Also enclosed with the letter is an updated calendar for the remainder of the year.  Please note that our next event is a Discussion Group (and partial preparation session for the February conference) on Saturday, December 8.  It will be from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Crossroads (not UMSL as previously indicated).  It is in the afternoon because of ACT tests in the morning.  We hope to see you there.  Take care and don’t work too hard!  -- Arthur, Gloria, Gretchen, & Jennifer
